Fifty by seventy millimetres, with an unusually small head inside it: 44 to 51 per cent of the frame height, where most specifications sit nearer 70. Canada also governs the paper — the print must come from a commercial lab, dated and marked with the studio's name.
How much of the frame the head has to fill
Thirty-one to 36 mm of head in a 70 mm frame leaves 34 to 39 mm, more than half the picture, for hair clearance, neck and shoulders. At 600 dpi that is 728 to 843 pixels of a 1654-pixel frame. Crop as a portrait wants to be cropped, head at 80 per cent, and you land at 56 mm — twenty millimetres outside the band.
What gets this one sent back
- At a 51 per cent ceiling, a crop that passes the UK's 64 to 75 is far too tight here.
- White or light-coloured is permitted, more latitude than most specifications give: a pale grey or cream wall is accepted, not merely tolerated.
- The frame is 70 mm tall against 50 wide, so shoulders and upper chest belong in it. A tight crop misses the shape.
Half a metre clear of the wall so your shadow falls behind you, camera at about 1.5 metres so the lens does not widen your nose, soft light from the front. Take several.
Getting the print right
50×70 mm is a physical instruction; 1181×1654 pixels is what it becomes at 600 dpi. The head band follows the same conversion — 44–51% of 70 mm is 30.8–35.7 mm, or 728–844 pixels in the exported file.
No digital ceiling is published for this one, which means the print is the binding version and the file only has to survive being printed. Use the sheet rather than sending a single image to a shop — several copies at true size on one page costs the same and covers the spare everyone ends up needing.
Print at 100%, not "fit to page" — the default shrink is invisible to you and measurable to whoever checks it.
How it works
- 01Add a recent photoFacing the camera, plain wall behind. HEIC from an iPhone works directly.
- 02Frame it to 50×70 mmDrag and zoom until your head fills 44–51% of the frame height, matching the dashed guide.
- 03Check the warningsThe border area is measured against "plain white or light-coloured" and flagged if it is uneven.
- 04Download or printSave the 1181×1654 JPG, or take a print sheet with several copies laid out at true size.
