The 33×48 mm Chinese frame is not a trimmed 35×45: it is 2 mm narrower and 3 mm taller, nearer 1:1.45 than the usual 1:1.29. The digital file is unusual too, at 40 to 120 KB — a floor as well as a ceiling.
How much of the frame the head has to fill
Against a 48 mm height, 58–69% puts crown-to-chin between 27.8 and 33.1 mm, near enough the published 28–33 mm to be one window. Width is the constraint people miss: a head 15 to 22 mm across in a 33 mm frame leaves only 5.5 mm of wall each side at the limit. The taller proportion also means a crop made for a 35×45 form sits too low.
What gets this one sent back
- The 40 KB floor catches habitual compressors. Squeeze a 354×472 px JPEG too hard and it fails for being too small.
- The 354×472 px digital target is 3:4; the printed 33×48 mm is 11:16. One crop does not serve both.
- No glasses at all, and both ears showing. Take the frames off early so they leave no marks on your nose.
Half a metre clear of the wall so your shadow falls behind you, camera at about 1.5 metres so the lens does not widen your nose, soft light from the front. Take several.
Print and upload are two different specs
33×48 mm is a physical instruction; 354×472 pixels is what it becomes at 600 dpi. The head band follows the same conversion — 58–69% of 48 mm is 27.8–33.1 mm, or 274–326 pixels in the exported file.
The upload adds a third constraint the print does not have: a byte budget. China asks for 354×472 px as JPG, no larger than 120 KB, and no smaller than 40 KB. A file that satisfies the millimetres and fails the kilobytes is refused by the form before anyone reads the application, so the size search runs on every export here.
Print at 100%, not "fit to page" — the default shrink is invisible to you and measurable to whoever checks it.
How it works
- 01Add a recent photoFacing the camera, plain wall behind. HEIC from an iPhone works directly.
- 02Frame it to 33×48 mmDrag and zoom until your head fills 58–69% of the frame height, matching the dashed guide.
- 03Check the warningsThe border area is measured against "plain white" and flagged if it is uneven.
- 04Download or printSave the 354×472 JPG, or take a print sheet with several copies laid out at true size.
