Getting the photo right before you open the tool

Almost every rejection comes from the photograph itself rather than the file. Software can fix dimensions and file size; it cannot fix a shadow on the wall behind you.

Stand about half a metre in front of a plain, light-coloured wall, and have the camera about 1.5 metres away — far enough that the lens does not distort your face, which is why selfies at arm's length so often look subtly wrong. Face the camera squarely, keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed, and make sure both eyes are open and clearly visible. Use soft, even light from the front: a window on an overcast day is close to ideal, and an overhead ceiling light is close to the worst, because it drops shadows into your eye sockets.

Printing versus uploading

These are different requirements and it is easy to satisfy one while failing the other. An upload needs pixels and a byte budget; a printed photo needs millimetres and the right paper. The link between them is DPI, and the presets here output at the resolution each authority specifies, so a printed sheet comes out at true physical size.

When you print, set the printer to 100% scale. Every printer driver defaults to something like "fit to page" or "shrink to printable area", which reduces everything by a few percent — and a photo that is 3% too small is a photo that gets handed back.

Questions people actually ask

What size does a Italy photo have to be?
35×45 mm, which is 827×1063 pixels at 600 dpi. The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must fill 70–80% of the photo height.
What background colour is required?
Plain light. The tool measures the brightness and evenness of the border area and warns you if it does not look plain enough. It deliberately does not replace the background — a digitally cut-out background is often visible and can cause a rejection.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Cropping, resizing and encoding happen inside this browser tab. A passport photo is a biometric image of your face attached to an identity document, and it should not be casually handed to a web service.
Will it definitely be accepted?
The file will match the published technical requirements — dimensions, format, DPI and file size. Acceptance also depends on judgements no software can make: expression, lighting, whether you were wearing glasses, and how recent the photo is. We do not claim to guarantee acceptance and you should be sceptical of any tool that does.
How do I print these at the right size?
Use the print sheet, which lays out several copies at their true physical size on 4×6 inch or A4 paper with faint cut lines. When printing, set your printer to 100% or "actual size" — the default "fit to page" silently shrinks everything and produces photos that are slightly too small.
