Japan pins the ordinary 35×45 mm frame down with stacked margins rather than one ratio, which makes vertical placement unusually precise. It also accepts a light blue background as well as white, useful if your only plain wall is not actually white.
How much of the frame the head has to fill
The 60–75% guide over 45 mm gives a crown-to-chin span of 27.0 to 33.8 mm. The published head height is tighter and higher: 34 ± 2 mm, so 32 to 36 mm. They agree only between 32 and 33.8 mm, so put the crown near the top of the guide, not the middle. The official diagram fixes the rest: 4 ± 2 mm above the head, 7 ± 2 mm from chin to bottom edge.
What gets this one sent back
- Light blue is permitted, but only plain light blue. A gradient across the wall, or a visible corner, reads as a scene.
- With 4 ± 2 mm above the crown, hair volume counts as height. A high bun pushes the measurement out of range.
- No shadows is a lighting rule, not a background one. A wall lit from one side photographs with a shaded half.
Half a metre clear of the wall so your shadow falls behind you, camera at about 1.5 metres so the lens does not widen your nose, soft light from the front. Take several.
Getting the print right
35×45 mm is a physical instruction; 827×1063 pixels is what it becomes at 600 dpi. The head band follows the same conversion — 60–75% of 45 mm is 27.0–33.8 mm, or 638–797 pixels in the exported file.
No digital ceiling is published for this one, which means the print is the binding version and the file only has to survive being printed. Use the sheet rather than sending a single image to a shop — several copies at true size on one page costs the same and covers the spare everyone ends up needing.
Print at 100%, not "fit to page" — the default shrink is invisible to you and measurable to whoever checks it.
How it works
- 01Add a recent photoFacing the camera, plain wall behind. HEIC from an iPhone works directly.
- 02Frame it to 35×45 mmDrag and zoom until your head fills 60–75% of the frame height, matching the dashed guide.
- 03Check the warningsThe border area is measured against "plain white or light blue" and flagged if it is uneven.
- 04Download or printSave the 827×1063 JPG, or take a print sheet with several copies laid out at true size.
