Two routes lead to a Pakistani passport and each wants the photograph differently. At a DGIP office, capturing your photograph is step two of the counter process, ahead of fingerprints; through the online renewal service you supply the image yourself — plain white, head and shoulders close in, under six months old.

How much of the frame the head has to fill

The face occupies 70–80% of the 45 mm side: 31.5 mm as the floor, 36 mm as the ceiling, or 744 to 850 pixels tall in an image 827 wide and 1063 high at 600 dpi. Both ears must be visible, and that quietly governs the framing — a head turned a few degrees loses one, and hair falling forward hides them just as thoroughly.

What gets this one sent back

  • An ear behind hair is a hidden ear. Tuck it back before shooting rather than arguing the case afterwards with a crop.
  • Images cut down from a larger picture are excluded for online submission, and a face lifted from a group shot goes soft anyway.
  • Mouth closed, expression neutral, nothing tinted over the eyes; a heavy frame across the eyeline is as much trouble as a dark lens.

Half a metre clear of the wall so your shadow falls behind you, camera at about 1.5 metres so the lens does not widen your nose, soft light from the front. Take several.

Getting the print right

35×45 mm is a physical instruction; 827×1063 pixels is what it becomes at 600 dpi. The head band follows the same conversion — 70–80% of 45 mm is 31.5–36.0 mm, or 744–850 pixels in the exported file.

No digital ceiling is published for this one, which means the print is the binding version and the file only has to survive being printed. Use the sheet rather than sending a single image to a shop — several copies at true size on one page costs the same and covers the spare everyone ends up needing.

Print at 100%, not "fit to page" — the default shrink is invisible to you and measurable to whoever checks it.

How it works

  1. 01Add a recent photoFacing the camera, plain wall behind. HEIC from an iPhone works directly.
  2. 02Frame it to 35×45 mmDrag and zoom until your head fills 70–80% of the frame height, matching the dashed guide.
  3. 03Check the warningsThe border area is measured against "plain white" and flagged if it is uneven.
  4. 04Download or printSave the 827×1063 JPG, or take a print sheet with several copies laid out at true size.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need to bring printed photos to the passport office?
For an application made in person, the published process has an official capture your photograph at the counter as the second of eight steps, before fingerprints and data entry, so that visit does not hinge on a print. Online renewal reverses it: you supply a professionally taken image, plain white background, a close-up of head and shoulders, under six months old and not cut from a bigger picture.
Why must both ears be visible?
The requirement is in the published rules; what matters practically is what it does to your posture. Facing the lens absolutely straight on is the only dependable way to keep both in view, since even a small turn puts one behind the cheek. Move hair back before the shot. A scarf edge, a heavy fringe or a raised collar can each cover an ear and cost you the photograph.
How do I keep both ears in frame without looking like a mugshot?
Point your chin at the lens rather than your eyes. Most people, told to face the camera, level their gaze and leave the head turned a few degrees from where it was resting — enough to bring one ear forward and tuck the other behind the line of the cheek. Fixing the chin fixes the rotation, and the expression stays neutral instead of stiff. Then deal with the hair separately: pushed behind the shoulders is not the same as behind the ears, and it is the front edge along the jaw that covers them.
What size does a Pakistan photo have to be?
35×45 mm, which is 827×1063 pixels at 600 dpi. The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must fill 70–80% of the photo height.
What background colour is required?
Plain white. The border area is measured and flagged if it is uneven. The background is never replaced digitally — a cut-out edge is visible and gets photos rejected.
Is my Pakistan photo uploaded anywhere?
No — the crop and the JPEG encode both run in this browser tab. A biometric image of your face is not a file to hand to a web service.
How do I print 35×45 mm at the right size?
Use the print sheet — several copies laid out at true 35×45 mm with faint cut lines — and set the printer to 100% rather than "fit to page". At 600 dpi the file is 827×1063 px, and a driver that shrinks by 3% turns 35 mm into something a ruler catches.
