The 43 × 55 mm frame appears in UAE visa paperwork — the territory of ICP, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, which issues entry permits, residence permits and Emirates ID. The size is the hazard: its proportions sit within half a per cent of the commoner 35 × 45.

How much of the frame the head has to fill

Sixty to seventy per cent of 55 mm gives a face 33 to 38.5 mm tall, or 780 to 909 pixels inside a 1016 × 1299 image at 600 dpi. Set that beside a 35 × 45 cropped to 70–80%: this frame is roughly a quarter larger in each dimension while the head claims a smaller share of it, so the subject sits further back, with more shoulder and more wall in view.

What gets this one sent back

  • A 35 × 45 file rescaled to fit survives a glance and fails a ruler. Recrop from the original photograph instead.
  • Coverings worn for religious reasons are provided for; a cap, a hood or sunglasses parked on the forehead are not.
  • Background occupies more of this frame than of a smaller one, so a skirting board or a light switch is harder to keep out.

Half a metre clear of the wall so your shadow falls behind you, camera at about 1.5 metres so the lens does not widen your nose, soft light from the front. Take several.

Getting the print right

43×55 mm is a physical instruction; 1016×1299 pixels is what it becomes at 600 dpi. The head band follows the same conversion — 60–70% of 55 mm is 33.0–38.5 mm, or 779–909 pixels in the exported file.

No digital ceiling is published for this one, which means the print is the binding version and the file only has to survive being printed. Use the sheet rather than sending a single image to a shop — several copies at true size on one page costs the same and covers the spare everyone ends up needing.

Print at 100%, not "fit to page" — the default shrink is invisible to you and measurable to whoever checks it.

How it works

  1. 01Add a recent photoFacing the camera, plain wall behind. HEIC from an iPhone works directly.
  2. 02Frame it to 43×55 mmDrag and zoom until your head fills 60–70% of the frame height, matching the dashed guide.
  3. 03Check the warningsThe border area is measured against "plain white" and flagged if it is uneven.
  4. 04Download or printSave the 1016×1299 JPG, or take a print sheet with several copies laid out at true size.

Questions people actually ask

I already have 35 × 45 photos. Can I use those?
Not without recropping. The two share an aspect ratio to within about half a per cent, which is why the substitution feels safe, but the printed dimensions differ by 8 mm in width and 10 mm in height, and the head fills a smaller fraction of the taller frame. Return to the original photograph — scaling up an existing 35 × 45 leaves the head oversized and softens every edge.
Can I keep my hijab on for the photo?
Yes, since the rule excludes head coverings other than religious ones. What must hold is visibility: the whole face from chin to hairline stays clear, with nothing shading the eyes or the jaw. One note specific to this frame. A very pale scarf against white blurs the outline of the head, and that outline carries more weight here because the head occupies less of the picture.
What size does a United Arab Emirates photo have to be?
43×55 mm, which is 1016×1299 pixels at 600 dpi. The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must fill 60–70% of the photo height.
What background colour is required?
Plain white. The border area is measured and flagged if it is uneven. The background is never replaced digitally — a cut-out edge is visible and gets photos rejected.
Is my United Arab Emirates photo uploaded anywhere?
No — the crop and the JPEG encode both run in this browser tab. A biometric image of your face is not a file to hand to a web service.
How do I print 43×55 mm at the right size?
Use the print sheet — several copies laid out at true 43×55 mm with faint cut lines — and set the printer to 100% rather than "fit to page". At 600 dpi the file is 1016×1299 px, and a driver that shrinks by 3% turns 43 mm into something a ruler catches.
