The UK is the odd one out on background: not white, but plain cream or light grey. The digital route is unusual too — an uploaded photo must be at least 50 KB as well as no more than 10 MB, a floor as well as a ceiling.

How much of the frame the head has to fill

The 45 mm height gives a head of 29 to 34 mm, a five-millimetre window narrower than it feels through a viewfinder. In the 900 by 1200 pixel upload that is 768 to 900 pixels. Everything else — clearance above the hair, neck and shoulders below the chin — shares the remaining 11 to 16 mm. A UK photo reads as a face and a collar.

What gets this one sent back

  • Cream or light grey is the target, not brilliant white. A plain pale wall under soft frontal light usually lands there unaided.
  • A floor as well as a ceiling: under 50 KB the upload is out of spec, so hard compression fails in the other direction.
  • No shadow on the face, and none on the wall behind your head. Separation solves the second, not more light.

Half a metre clear of the wall so your shadow falls behind you, camera at about 1.5 metres so the lens does not widen your nose, soft light from the front. Take several.

Print and upload are two different specs

35×45 mm is a physical instruction; 900×1200 pixels is what it becomes at 600 dpi. The head band follows the same conversion — 64–75% of 45 mm is 28.8–33.8 mm, or 768–900 pixels in the exported file.

The upload adds a third constraint the print does not have: a byte budget. United Kingdom asks for 900×1200 px as JPG, no larger than 10240 KB, and no smaller than 50 KB. A file that satisfies the millimetres and fails the kilobytes is refused by the form before anyone reads the application, so the size search runs on every export here.

Print at 100%, not "fit to page" — the default shrink is invisible to you and measurable to whoever checks it.

How it works

  1. 01Add a recent photoFacing the camera, plain wall behind. HEIC from an iPhone works directly.
  2. 02Frame it to 35×45 mmDrag and zoom until your head fills 64–75% of the frame height, matching the dashed guide.
  3. 03Check the warningsThe border area is measured against "plain cream or light grey" and flagged if it is uneven.
  4. 04Download or printSave the 900×1200 JPG, or take a print sheet with several copies laid out at true size.

Questions people actually ask

Why does a UK passport photo need to be at least 50 KB?
A minimum file size is a proxy for detail. Spread 50 KB across a 900 by 1200 pixel image and you have under four-tenths of a bit per pixel, which is already firm compression — below it you get skin broken into blocks, or a picture scaled up from something much smaller. The stated 600 by 750 pixel minimum works from the other direction.
Can I photograph myself against a white wall?
A plain white wall is usually fine in practice, because a white wall rarely photographs as white. Unless you light it separately it records a stop or two darker than your face, landing in the light grey range the specification describes. What fails is not the paint colour but the evenness: a lamp to one side leaves a gradient across the frame.
What size does a United Kingdom photo have to be?
35×45 mm, which is 900×1200 pixels at 600 dpi. The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must fill 64–75% of the photo height. Digital submissions must be JPEG and no larger than 10240 KB.
What background colour is required?
Plain cream or light grey. The border area is measured and flagged if it is uneven. The background is never replaced digitally — a cut-out edge is visible and gets photos rejected.
Is my United Kingdom photo uploaded anywhere?
No — the crop and the JPG encode both run in this browser tab. A biometric image of your face is not a file to hand to a web service.
How do I print 35×45 mm at the right size?
Use the print sheet — several copies laid out at true 35×45 mm with faint cut lines — and set the printer to 100% rather than "fit to page". At 600 dpi the file is 900×1200 px, and a driver that shrinks by 3% turns 35 mm into something a ruler catches.
